With hearing, you hear only words. But in listening, you are listening to the meaning, and there is receptivity.

The hearer can be cheated. You could fill your head with all kinds of nonsense. But the listener can’t be cheated, because the listener is interested in truth, in the meaning.

If you hear someone who is saying “ready-made” things, that’s just information. Information doesn’t have much value other than for the mechanical dimension of daily life. But speaking from one’s own understanding has real value. If you listen to someone who, in their Being, is connected to what they are talking about, you are affected entirely differently, provided your desire for understanding is alive.
