Teaching Self-Breema Online

Letter from Jon Schreiber March 20, 2020

  • Dear Instructors,

We hope this finds you well and that Breema and its principles have been a support for you in this period. Recently, people have asked the Center about the possibility of instructing Self-Breema in an online setting. The Breema Center has decided to allow Self-Breema and Breema Instructors to present Self-Breema in online venues provisionally during these exceptional times. We are planning to monitor and evaluate the effects/results, and based on our findings, either continue or modify our policy.

Since in most areas, actual in-person classes are temporarily not possible, the "virtual" class may be the best available option for many people. We hope that those who study and practice Self-Breema in this way will understand that the potential benefits of attending an actual class are far greater, and will do so when circumstances again permit that. Ultimately, Self-Breema must be learned live — the way that all of us did.

Meanwhile, here are a number of guidelines and  suggestions that we ask Instructors to follow to help everyone have a more beneficial experience. These are all in the direction of maintaining a harmonious atmosphere:
    1. If you haven’t held an online class before, practice with friends or fellow Breema Instructors to make sure that the experience will be a technically smooth one, both for you and for your students.
    2. The "classroom" environment and appearance is important. Please make sure the room that you are presenting from is not visually overwhelming or distracting and, of course, clean. A simple background is helpful.
    3. We suggest wearing solid color clothing, and making sure to minimize exposed skin. If you're not wearing a gi, it is best to wear long pants, socks and long sleeves.
    4. Make sure to eliminate or minimize sounds coming from other parts of the house/apartment.
    5. Before beginning the class, let the students know that they can adjust the volume. Offer support about which orientation (vertical or horizontal) is preferable for their device if you know. Let them know they can tell you if there is a sound or buffering problem.
    6. As always, please show Self-Breema exercises that you have practiced a lot, which you relate to well, and "have in your body." It's always worthwhile (and sometimes a surprise!) to double check that you know the form precisely by looking up the exercises you wish to show and watching them on the Instructor Self-Breema Video Library.
    7. Remember, you can let your students know there are helpful resources on the Breema Center website, information about Breema and inspirational material about the Principles, and Essence of Breema excerpts.

Since this is a new step for all of us, please let us know when you come upon some useful information or something from your experience that may be of value for other instructors. We wish you, and those who learn and practice Self-Breema with you great benefit!

We, of course, welcome your resumes.

    All the best,
    Jon

Benefit from Self-Breema Notes

Self-Breema notes can be an additional support for students participating in an online class. The document "Benefiting from Self-Breema Notes" can accompany those notes being sent to beginning students who may need more support to know the purpose and direction of using Self-Breema notes.

Benefit from writing a Breema Resume

Writing a resume for your Self-Breema class, whether co-instructing or hosting the class, supports you to clearly see your experience. Often, the atmosphere of the class becomes alive for you while you are writing and you benefit by it a second time. Your resume is not only a great way to stay connected to your experience but it also connects you and your teaching activity to the Center, as it is read by senior staff members at the Breema Center.
